David Richard Contemporary is pleased to present a group exhibition representing a spectrum of 1960s American abstract art. The show is curated by Gary Snyder, based in New York and regarded as a “revisionist dealer” for the many exhibitions he has presented over the last 20 years that examine art and artists rooted in the 1930s through the 1960s. This is the first in a series of historically oriented exhibitions that David Richard Contemporary will present, with the belief that the dialogue between contemporary and historical abstraction is vital for artist and audience alike.
The range of artists, over 30 in all, spreads from those associated with the Washington Color School – including Leon Berkowitz, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing and Howard Mehring – to hard edge, geometric and optical abstraction painters – such as Ilya Bolotowsky, Roy Colmer, Paul Huxley, Ward Jackson, Rakuko Naito and Sidney Wolfson. Color Field painting is represented by Cleve Gray, Vivian Springford and Albert Stadler. Gestural abstractionists at the exhibition include Mario Garcia, Matsumi Kanemitsu, Sumiye Okoshi and Ralph Rosenborg. In addition to the Japanese artists already noted, who worked in New York during the 1960s and adapted and re-interpreted the diverse local tendencies, work of Minoru Kawabata, Masatoyo Kishi and Hisao Hanafusa will also be presented.
A small solo exhibition in the north gallery of Beatrice Mandelman, a Taos Modernist, will offer a selection of her work from the 1960s, including both collages and paintings produced while living in New Mexico.
Snyder states: “In general, it takes 50 years to flesh out an art historical period. In the 1980s, galleries and museums looked at the embrace of European modernism by the American Abstract Artists group in New York City and the Transcendental Painting Group in New Mexico, both which formed circa 1937. The 1990s saw the exploration of the second-generation Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s. We are now poised for a more comprehensive examination of the 1960s.”
The exhibition catalogue will be presented on-line at DavidRichardContemporary.com and include an essay by Peter Frank, art historian, Senior Curator at the Riverside Art Museum and art critic with the Huffington Post. The catalogue will also include excerpts written by Robert Hobbs from the chapter on the 1960s and 1970s in his book, “Beatrice Mandelman, Taos Modernist.”
