Carol Brown Goldberg

Biography:

Carol Brown Goldberg was born in Baltimore, MD. She moved to the Washington, DC metro area after graduating from University of Maryland with a B.A. in American Studies. She then pursued her studies at the Corcoran School of Art under Gene Davis, where she was awarded the Eugene M. Weisz award upon graduation. In 1989 and 1990, Goldberg produced and curated a 14-part lecture series, “Voices of Our Time,” which explored the relationship between art and science. In 2012 she was included in an exhibition and panel discussion in Berlin, Germany, Checkpoint Ilgen #9, focusing on the connection between art and the brain. She has taught at American University and University of Maryland, was Artist in Residence at Chautauqua Institute, is the recipient of the Maryland State Arts Award, and serves on the board of The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

Her work has been included in various publications, and in 2012 was featured on the cover for Art Santa Fe. She has shown in the U.S. and internationally in over 100 solo and group exhibitions, including traveling exhibits throughout Spain and Mexico. Her work is included in many museums and private collections, including New Orleans Museum of Art and National Museum for Women in the Arts, as well as permanent outdoor sculpture installations at The Kreeger Museum, The Katzen Arts Center at American University, and George Washington University. In 2012 she produced the award winning film, The Color of Time, which debuted at The Katzen Arts Center at American University. She has recently been awarded third prize for a sculpture installation scheduled for the Parque de Levante in Murcia, Spain. Upcoming solo exhibitions include The Reading Museum the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

Statement:

I approach each art work as if it is its own universe, bringing infinity into perspective and challenging what cannot be measured. I do this to better understand notions of time, physics, aesthetics, philosophy, life, and death. Beauty and complexity want to be revealed in the rhythmical process of layering repeated lines, geometric patterns, and grids of circles, dots, markings.

I am also fascinated by the process of seeing; how our retina absorbs information and transmits this information to the brain. When the fovea of the viewer’s eye focuses on center of the canvas, the peripheral vision make sense of what we see. This results in an image that seems to pulsate as the viewer’s eye moves across the luminous center of the paintings. A halo or aura occurs as the eye is pulled towards the lightest value ((Kantian's philosophy of sense perception)).

Expressing themes of color and luminosity, the micro and macro, and how we see, only increases my awe and wonder at the beauty and mystery of the universe.
